Purpose of the Role
The consumption of rail travel is at a ‘once in a generation’ moment of inflexion due to the change in consumer behaviour the global pandemic has brought. We see the future of ticketing innovation as one of the most exciting initiatives influencing this, and we’re working in partnership with government departments globally to bring data to the forefront of this development alongside new payment solutions and technology collaborations…and that’s where you come in.
As Lead Product Designer, your challenge will be to pave the vision for digital mobile ticketing and turn it into reality, validating new disruptive ideas and shipping iterations to transform the industry. You’ll be at the forefront of this brave new world, and it will be your responsibility to develop a thorough understanding of the customer to build next-generation products that will drive this mass behaviour change for rail passengers.
We’re proud of the innovation around ticketing we’ve driven. Our e-ticket product has been a game-changer within the rail industry, and we now account for over 70% of all digital tickets sold in the UK. As a key contributor to our future business growth, you’ll be laser focused on using rich insights and deep qual and quant data to understand the opportunities that technology and future digital innovation can bring to enhancing our proposition.
Probably most exciting of all are multiple scopes and dimensions this innovation can, and will, deliver for the business and wider industry. On one hand, there are a wealth of possibilities that contactless and NFC technologies can generate within the UK and international markets. However, embedding this technology into our app will unleash untapped potential in the commuter market which has returned to growth, post-Covid.
We ship new products at speed and employ a ‘build/test/learn’ mentality around our product development. To this end, success lies in your customer-centric mindset, your ability to challenge thinking and provoke debateacross multiple teams, and your vision in seeing the bigger picture of what the business as a whole is trying to achieve and how your initiatives fit. This is a truly career-defining role for someone passionate about product design looking for an opportunity to disrupt and define a product that is changing the way we travel and inspiring millions people all over the world to make more environmentally sustainable travel choices every day.
Knowledge & Experience
We’re looking for creative big thinkers with low egos to achieve our ambitious plans. You’ll be someone with deep understanding of the full UX process, and pixel perfect sensitivity in tying in with our vision for this product. Similarly, you’ll be used to running usability testing sessions and defining how the outputs can be carried into design processes.
Outstanding communication and storytelling are critical in this role as you convey concepts and ideas to stakeholders at all levels in different shapes depending on the context. Your excellent leadership and relationship skills go without saying, and you’ll be used to mentoring or managing other junior designers bringing an empowering way of working. Oozing creativity and a beacon of inspiration and design excellence in the team, you’ll understand that Product teams fail as many times as they succeed albeit you’re capable of understanding why, and will bring an action orientated, hands-on approach to solving creative challenges.
Validating ideas with data and customer research will come as second nature to you, and understand that success is positively impacting customer behaviour, not just about shipping a release. You’ll bring experience designing digital products and systems, not just apps. Additionally, you will be a true self-starter who can deeply collaborate with Engineers and Product Owners. Empowering people to make greener travel choices is central to our focus in 2022 and beyond. And it’s the unique blend of innovation, creativity, technology and customer-first experiences we’ve developed that are the core principles to our world class Design team. Led by Will Barker, our new Design Director (previously leading UX teams at IDEO & Samsung), the team are laser focused on building the world’s #1 rail platform benefiting our communities and our world by reducing congestion and our collective carbon footprint - we believe our work has a genuine impact and will change travel for the better.
Purpose of the Role
In recent years we’ve made great strides in building out our offering across Europe but we’re just getting started. For years the international train travel market has been owned by the market incumbents such as SNCF, Trenitalia and DB but, we have lofty ambitions to break the mould with a vision of bringing more innovative value adding features to market that solve customer problems that have existed for far too long. As the only product across Europe that truly brings together all the rail options into one place we’re perfectly placed to do this - helping customers find the best journey for them, getting them better value for money, supporting them in times of disruption and much much more.
The time has never been more advantageous as the rail market is liberalising across Europe meaning more train brands are available to more customers, strengthening our proposition as an aggregator of rail. We truly believe we can disrupt the International market as we have succeeded in doing in the UK, making greener travel choices easier for people, and that’s where you come in. Our newly formed Paris based international UX Team made up of Designers, Researchers and Content experts is looking for another team member to join and focus on helping us unlock all the possibilities of being the worlds number one rail platform business.

Role progression 🚀
Although we are seeking a “Freelancer” for right now we’d love to eventually have the possibility of you joining the team full-time!
So let’s talk a bit about role progression!
A lot of companies build cookie-cutter progression models that make their people feel like turtles climbing up a slide 🐢
It's a slow & painful climb!
We don't like these outdated traditional systems that limit people's full potential...
We believe everyone should have the opportunity to progress at a "Road Runner" speed with no limitations.
You should also be rewarded heavily if you've played a significant contribution to the growth of the agency ⚡🚀
How does our progression system work?
Let's take a look inside the system & explain some of the major components so you can understand exactly how we're able to give everyone in this role the opportunity for rapid growth!
Strengths & MO Analysis
Our progression system begins before you even join the team.
Prior to joining the team, part of our interview process requires you to take the Clifton Strengths 34 assessment & the Kolbe A test so we can better understand your strengths & operating style.
We use this data to help us better understand where & how you can grow the fastest.
Role Progression Examples
Alex started as an Advertising Specialist & upon examining his Clifton Strengths assessment & previous work history we discovered Alex had a deep love for people, operations, & strong prior managerial experience - thus he quickly took on the role of a Manager. He is now our COO and part-owner of the business.
Destaney joined BetterAMS as an Advertising Specialist in 2018 & entered a marketing & sales role after 1 year, she has since become an expert thought leader in the space! Also, she's now the CEO & co-owner!
Compensation Increases 💸
Again we don't have a cookie-cutter pathway where we can tell you that if you achieve XYZ we'll give you a promotion to XYZ title & which will result in an annual base salary raise of X%
We are a small & rapidly growing agency.
We do our best to measure the impact each team member has on the bottom line & give raises accordingly.
We do quarterly & annual reviews with everyone as well as monthly 1on1's, all of which help us keep a pulse on the impact everyone has on the bottom line in order to give fair compensation increases!
Working hours
There's no strict working schedule you must adhere to, we try to maintain a performance-based culture!
We're very flexible with working hours. Most of us step away for a coffee or a lunchtime gym session in the middle of the day. We just ask that you are able to be reached during normal business hours.
If you want to take your dog or child to the park after lunch & you don't have anything urgent to do, then great...go for it 🎡!!
**We simply ask that you don't abuse the privileges of working remotely & that you're responsible for scheduling your days & how much you're working!
Time away from work ✈️
All-time off is paid time off 🥳
- There's no limit to the number of sick or vacation days. Take what you need to perform at your best!
- We always recommend taking vacation time to "refresh and re-energize!"
- More info on this can be found in our Company Holidays & Time Off Doc!

This is a hands-on leadership role with an opportunity to set the creative strategy and vision for our Square Staff workforce management suite: Labor Management, Payroll, and Team Communications. Our team’s mission is to tell the best possible stories about our products and ecosystem so that our sellers and their employees can thrive.

You should be a self-starter, an empathetic people manager, a strategic problem solver, and an early adopter with tenacity and experience to move the team forward in the face of ambiguity.
You will lead our creative team to deeply understand audiences and harness trends and tactics. You will define and refine content, creative, positioning, and messaging that resonates. - Inspire our multidisciplinary team which includes both dedicated and shared resources such as copywriting, design, studio production, and web technology. Provide the vision for our next generation of outstanding art direction, photography direction, videography direction, design, typography & branding application direction.
- Lead the go-to-market creative strategy for our new Square for Staff offering. Partner with executives and stakeholders to determine which customers to reach and formulate the overarching strategy, channels, and tone to best reach them.
- Use data to inspire concepts, refine creative, and validate executions and ensure the work is the best it can be.
- Raise the bar for quality in all executions. Oversee and, when needed, design concepts, style-frames, assets, and visual treatments.
- Translate brand strategy into powerful and purposeful creative concepts. Leverage our new brand standards, identity, and design system to craft the next generation of creative across web, mobile, social, email, and out of home.

Company Description
Since we first opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely—and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take a payment and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together. So we expanded into software and started building integrated, omni-channel solutions—to help sellers run a busy store, deepen customer relationships, sell online, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff.
Today, we’re a partner to sellers of all sizes—enterprise-scale businesses with complex commerce operations, sellers just starting out, and merchants who began selling with Square and have grown larger over time. As our sellers scale, so do our solutions. We all grow together.
There is a massive opportunity in front of us. We’re building a business that is big, meaningful, and lasting. And we are helping sellers around the world do the same.
Additional Information
We’re working to build a more inclusive economy where our customers have equal access to opportunity, and we strive to live by these same values in building our workplace. Block is a proud equal opportunity employer. We work hard to evaluate all employees and job applicants consistently, without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, disability, pregnancy, gender expression or identity, sexual orientation, citizenship, or any other legally protected class.
We believe in being fair, and are committed to an inclusive interview experience, including providing reasonable accommodations to disabled applicants throughout the recruitment process. We encourage applicants to share any needed accommodations with their recruiter, who will treat these requests as confidentially as possible. Want to learn more about what we’re doing to build a workplace that is fair and square? Check out our I+D page.
Additionally, we consider qualified applicants with criminal histories for employment on our team, and always assess candidates on an inidualized basis.
