Devops Engineering Consultant
Resolve to Save Lives is a global health organization that aims to save millions of lives by reducing preventable deaths from cardiovascular disease and to prevent infectious disease epidemics. Since September 2017, Resolve to Save Lives has worked closely with low- and middle-income country governments, the World Health Organization, academic and other civil society partners to build capacity for and implement a core package of interventions to reduce cardiovascular disease, the world’s leading cause of death. To learn more about our work, visit: Home | Resolve to Save Lives
Job summary
We’re looking for a Devops Consultant to help us accomplish our goal of partnering with countries to save 100 million lives in 30 years. Our team provides software to support public health programs that aim to prevent cardiovascular disease. Read more about our work at Resolve Cardiovascular Health. This is a short-term contract position for a period of six months.
Our team developed Simple (simple.org), a free, open source app used by healthcare workers to better manage patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. By allowing doctors to track patient care over time, we can help them control blood pressure and prevent heart attacks and strokes. Today, Simple is used by thousands of nurses and doctors every day, treating almost 2 million patients across India, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, and Sri Lanka, with all data owned exclusively by the countries themselves.
Running Simple in 4 countries comes with its set of challenges. Deployment environments and configurations differ from country to country. In addition, some of our partners would like to migrate their deployment of Simple away from cloud-based services and into government-owned data centers. By joining our team, you will play a pivotal role in several ways.
- Our short term goal of migrating existing Simple deployments to new hosting environments.
- Our long term goal of building a sustainable deployment pipeline that allows us to deploy Simple to new countries quickly and reliably, adapting to the country’s needs and constraints.
Achieving these goals ensures that we can continue to support almost 2 million (and growing!) patients with their hypertension treatment. We also unlock the ability to easily say yes to launching Simple in more countries.
Our team prides itself on:
- Delivering fast, simple software used by healthcare workers in clinics every day
- Working on solutions for tens of millions of patients
- Building holistic products
- Contributing to an open source project used in multiple countries
- Open, honest, and supportive collaboration with the rest of the Simple product team
- Shipping and iterating instead of chasing perfection
- Ensuring patient privacy and data security
Our approach
Simple consists of a Ruby on Rails server that provides a web dashboard for public health workers as well as a sync API for the offline-first Simple mobile app.
The web dashboard provides aggregated reports at the regional and clinic levels, allowing public health officers to see what’s working and address program issues in the field. Our reports are used to help return patients to care, ensure drugs are in stock, and assist hospital administrators in staffing and training needs.
Here are some example projects that give you some idea of what’s in store:
- Improving how our app is deployed in AWS, on-premise servers in government data centers, and in other third-party cloud services
- Automating and simplifying our infrastructure setup process across our various deployments
- Dockerizing our infrastructure so we can deploy in varied environments
- Migrate existing deployments of Simple to government-owned hosting environments
- Revamp our monitoring and alerting strategy to more effectively keep an eye on the health of Simple deployments across several countries.
**Mindset
**We try hard to be a team full of empathy, inclusion, and respect. We trust each other, have hard conversations with open mindedness, and assume positive intent. We are a small team of self-directed people. Once familiar with the project, we expect engineers to be able to take ownership and guide large projects from start to finish. We write down ideas and work as asynchronously as possible, meeting via video conference when necessary. Proposing ideas and trying things matter more than always being right. We are frequently wrong and try to write code we can easily change when we learn new things. We’re excited for you to participate and look forward to helping you grow your own skills as well.**Diversity
**Given that we’re writing software for the globe, it’s critical that our team represent the erse environments in which we operate. We strive for an inclusive, erse team with different perspectives, ideas, and identities.About you
We are seeking an experienced candidate who is ready to do work that matters. The ideal candidate embraces learning about our challenges, has solved common infrastructure and devops challenges (especially at scale), and can work effectively with our entirely remote team.
Here’s what makes a successful engineer at Resolve:
- Value simplicity over perfection
- Be a problem solver and doer, take ownership of your work
- Focus on outcomes instead of getting lost in details
- Clear communications that empower and enable others
- Ask for help when you need it
- Coach, share knowledge, and nurture a supportive engineering culture
- Don’t be afraid to try things and learn from mistakes
- Set clear timelines and document progress
We’re keen to find someone for whom our problems look familiar. Critically, we also want someone who is curious, writes and communicates well, can thrive while working asynchronously across many time zones, anticipates user needs from a human level, and always looks to keep things simple and iterate. We’re looking for someone who can self-manage, plans their time wisely, and delivers straightforward solutions to vague problems.

Hey there! I’m Brandon Bayer, the founder and CEO of Flightcontrol. We are 4 person startup fresh out of Y Combinator that’s building something truly special. More than fundamentally changing the way most people deploy applications, we’re intentionally building the most life-giving and fulfilling company possible. My cofounder Mina and I care so deeply about building a company that helps people become the fullest version of who they are and helps them thrive personally and professionally.
Flightcontrol is solving the huge gap between Heroku and AWS
Today there is a big tradeoff between Heroku (and it’s derivatives) which is easy to use but very limiting and restricting, and AWS which gives you full power and control but is a nightmare to use. We solve this by providing a layer on top of a company’s own AWS account that makes it very easy to use while still letting them pop the hood and leverage the raw power of AWS directly.
So far our customers are in love with the product, saying things like “you’ve nailed the simplicity without sacrificing control” and “this is probably the best way I’ve ever deployed my software”.
We launched in January, have 19 paying customers, and over $3M in funding. We have amazing investors, including Matt Biilmann (Netlify), Doron Sherman (VP of DevRel, Cloudinary), Randall Kent (Cypress.io), Zach Holman (#9 at Github), Nader Dabit (former AWS), Brian Douglas, Swizec, and Shawn Wang (swyx).
Meet Our Current Team of 4
- Brandon Bayer, Founder and CEO. Dayton, Ohio. You might know me as the creator of Blitz.js. Although highly technical, my strengths are product design and marketing. My superpower is simplicity. My top values that define everything I do are excellence, equality, inclusion, and freedom. Outside of work I love traveling, flying airplanes and helicopters, and rock climbing. My intention is to be the very best CEO and manager in the world. With a goal to build the best company to work for. I’m not here to be a boss. I’m here to support you and help make your dreams come true.
- Mina Abadir, Cofounder. Toronto, Canada. Mina is the technical genius that brings our core product features to life. He’s deeply authentic and caring, loves to laugh, and greatly enjoys a good video game. His superpower is empathy.

- You?
We need a senior AWS DevOps engineer to continue building out the future of infra DX
**
We need someone who is very experienced with AWS DevOps**. Ideally you have even more experience than Mina and will be able to bring tremendous value to both the design and implementation of features. You will work alongside my cofounder Mina to develop our core functionality. You can see our public roadmap here. There are a ton of hard problems you’ll help us solve. Our core product boils down to a very sophisticated orchestration system that integrates with many different services, currently all in AWS but we’ll also be adding third-party integrations too.
Ideally you have both wide and deep AWS expertise. Or at a minimum wide with some deep experience and with ability to get deeper on anything that’s required. It’s a bonus if you already have any AWS certification
We use Typescript and Temporal to build all our AWS integrations. Temporal is an incredible technology that came out of Uber for managing complex backend workflows. It simplifies complexity in a similar way to how async/await simplifies promises and callbacks. We don’t expect you to know Temporal — we’ll help you get up to speed on it as much as you need.
For Flightcontrol features, we usually use a Cloudformation stack to create the initial service, but after that we use the AWS Typescript SDK to make direct API calls for updating and changing services.
**To summarize, you should have:
**- Knowledge with wide range of AWS services
- Ability to use multiple AWS services to build complex solutions
- Good working knowledge of security and networking best practices
- Experience with both server and serverless infrastructure
- Know your way through Docker
- Know Typescript or have the desire and ability to learn Typescript
- AWS certification is ++
What We Expect of You
- Bring as much of your personal self to work as you are comfortable with
- Do your very best work
- Have a life outside work, whether it’s hobbies, side projects, reading, etc. As long as you have something and work isn’t all you live for
- Complete honesty and integrity
- Be creative and innovative
- Be involved in our product planning, bringing your own ideas for what we should be doing and how we should be doing it.
- Help give our customers the very best experience possible. We all help with customer support.
- Be a leader. As one of our first employees, our future hires will look up to you and learn from you.
- Be human. We don’t expect you to be perfect. We all have a basement of bad experiences, insecurities, and anxieties. Our hope is that being part of our team is a huge beam of sunshine in your life that encourages and empowers you to overcome the challenges in the rest of your life.
This Job Is Not For You If
- You are not interested in growing professionally or personally
- You need or want someone to tell you exactly what to do
- You don’t want to bring any of your personal self to work. We’re actually totally ok with that, but the rest of us bring a lot of ourselves to work so that might be uncomfortable for you.
- You aren’t ok with with the company growing in team size, first slowly, but then increasing in speed over the next 1-2 years. When we enter that growth stage, you’ll have to learn to give away your Legos and work on bigger and more impactful things every so many months.

- Generous Equity via Stock Options, as employee #3 or #4

- Minimum 4 Weeks PTO - It's critical to have good work life balance, so you must take at least 4 weeks PTO each year.
