Senior SQL Database Administrator

As a member of our Cloud Operations Team, you will be responsible for building and maintaining high performance/availability databases for Unanet’s entire product offering. You will join a team of highly talented, rapidly moving engineers and administrators involved in nearly every aspect of the SaaS delivery and customer experience lifecycle.

We are looking for an experienced DBA with extensive experience designing, testing, and supporting next-generation database solutions in Postgres enterprise and SQL Server environments. You should be proficient in an assortment of technologies, including AWS Aurora (Postgres) and MS SQL Server on both Windows and Linux operating systems on AWS. You should also be passionate about solving problems, forward-thinking, and able to evaluate impacts across the environment.

Your First 90 Days

In your First 30 Days, as your familiarity with our product line grows, your responsibilities and influence will grow as well. You will become immersed in all facets of the daily operation of the production cloud database environment, including processes for provisioning new customers, pushing schema updates, reviewing metrics and alerts, troubleshooting, and blameless incident postmortems. You will work with our development leaders of our GovCon ERP product to build knowledge of the database schema. Further, you will collaborate with members of both the Product Development and Cloud Development teams to help ensure operations can support new functionality.

Within your First 60 Days, you will take the lead in database metric reviews and alerting capabilities, including formulating recommendations on enhancing our observability into database activity. You will work with development leaders of our CRM product to build knowledge of the database schema. During this period, you should become familiar with all existing JIRA items relating to database/SQL performance issues. You, along with the rest of the Cloud Support team, will be responsible for supporting production environments.

Within your First 90 Days, you will help drive changes to the operational and development roadmap as we continue onboarding new and existing customers into our hosted production environments. You will work with development leaders of our A/E ERP product to build knowledge of the database schema. During this time, you will begin implementing query/database performance improvements. You will become the primary point of contact for triaging newly reported query or database-related issues. You will work our Director of Information Security to become familiar with the compliance requirements and ongoing projects to secure our production databases.

What You’ll Do

  • Design, test, provision, configure, and maintain databases for our production environments; this includes building high-performance, highly-available database systems capable of scaling as our customer base grows
  • Build and maintain infrastructure that supports highly-available database platforms \
  • System Performance Tuning
  • SQL Query Performance Tuning
  • Familiarize yourself with the database schemas for our products to assist development with query construction and optimization
  • Participate in capacity monitoring to help plan for platform growth
  • Mentor Database Administration skills in other team members
  • Design and manage backup solutions to meet established retention, RPO, and RTO policies
  • Disaster Recovery planning and testing
  • Establish metrics and observability of database platforms
  • Secure our customers’ data through continued database vulnerability scanning and hardening

Who You Are

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience as a production DBA managing an environment with 1,000+ customers
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Aurora or Postgres)
  • Performance optimization experience (SQL queries, hardware sizing, etc.)
  • Experience planning and architecting production database infrastructure
  • Experience hardening production database environments
  • Experience working in an AWS hosted environment
  • Driven, humble, and autonomous, capable of assisting with backlog creation and prioritization
  • A quick study, strong communicator, and ability to adapt to fast-paced environments
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent documentation skills, and ability to successfully manage multiple priorities
  • Troubleshooting skills that range from diagnosing hardware/software issues to large scale failures within a complex infrastructure

Your Differentiators

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent
  • Working knowledge of Agile Development practices (e.g., SCRUM, TDD)

The salary range for this opportunity is $130,000 – $145,000 per year. You will be eligible for discretionary bonus compensation, subject to plans that may be in effect from time to time.
