What are we looking for?

WorkMoney is looking for a Lead Data Scientist with hands-on experience in natural language processing to help transform our data into information. In the year ahead, WorkMoney will be tackling complex problems like identifying signs of financial crisis in text messages, building personas and segments based on text patterns and surfacing key themes and topics in comment collection. This role will lead the data team in the creation of sentiment analyzers, topic modeling, archetype building and more. Successful candidates will have experience with building production ready NLP projects, supervised and unsupervised learning techniques and at least one programming language for data science. We also need someone who can think big and creatively about using data science techniques to help us accomplish our core vision.

As WorkMoney's data science "expert" in a startup environment, you may tackle many projects. We are open to iniduals at various levels and encourage you to apply if you are interested in WorkMoney's mission and meet many of the core requirements. We are open to applicants with various levels of leadership experience for this role. Applicants with applicable experience above principal level will be considered at the Staff level.

Requirements

Core technical responsibilities:

• Work on mission oriented projects in support of Work Money's broader goals
• Write clean, concise and optimized code
• Leverage the latest NLP technologies to help interpret our text data and answer important organizational questions
• Build high quality machine learning models that contribute to the data team’s ongoing segmentation and personalization efforts
• Own all parts of the project lifecycle from data transformation and cleaning to model deployment
• Think big and creatively about the application of data science techniques in accomplishing WorkMoney’s goals

Additional responsibilities at Staff level:

• Hire, Supervise, and support one or more analysts
• Provide informal mentorship and training to colleagues
• Act as a project, product, and personnel manager to move forward complex projects
• Explore new and creative ways to solve economic justice challenges using data and technology

Core requirements for the role

• A desire to work in a mission oriented environment; alignment with WorkMoney's economic justice goals
• Experience building and deploying production NLP and machine learning models in a cloud environment (AWS preferred)
• Expert in Python or other data science programming language
• Fluency with NLP techniques like Topic Modeling, Named Entity Recognition, Sentiment Analysis and Information Extraction
• Excellent communication skills with technical & non-technical audiences alike
• Self-motivated problem solver with a knack for sniffing out data inaccuracies

For consideration as a Staff level, applicants will meet some of the following requirements:

• Staff management experience and a desire to grow these skills
• Experience with project and/or product management in a flexible environment
• Vendor management and evaluation experience
• Extensive experience with advocacy, legislative or electoral campaign data science

Benefits

Salary for Principal level is $160,000

Salary for Staff level starts at $175,000
