Kialo is looking for a remote, freelance UI & Graphic Designer to join our Berlin-based product design team.

As our UI & Graphic Designer, you will be responsible for the visual design of our web app, along with the look and feel of our web and brand presence, including the design of our blogs, help centers and social media.

Kialo is the world’s largest argument mapping site: facilitating, capturing and visualizing the world’s hardest debates. We have grown into a community with tens of thousands of debates and millions of contributions since our launch in 2017.

In November 2019 we launched Kialo Edu, our dedicated site for educators, which grew to almost half a million users within the first three years. Educators worldwide use it to teach critical thinking and facilitate thoughtful classroom discussion.

Responsibilities

  • The visual design of all our web assets, including home pages and apps of Kialo and Kialo Edu.

  • Taking control of all aspects of our design process, from concept through to pixel-perfect designs.

  • Ownership of our style guide; keeping it up to date with all changes, and new components.

  • Working closely with our product design team to come up with mockups and ideas for new features.

  • Creating icons and other graphical or illustrative elements.

Essential skills

  • A creative mind that can get the product design team thinking in new ways.

  • Able to take verbal and written briefs, ask questions, and adapt based on those responses to come up with beautiful solutions.

  • Self-starter mentality; comfortable with working autonomously; self-organizing to create deliverables at a regular cadence.

  • Previous experience working on commercial web apps.

  • Understanding of responsive design.

  • Fluent and comfortable in written and spoken English.

  • Familiar with UX artifacts such as mockups, as well as best practices.

  • Ability to create and edit icons with an understanding of how they will be used and seen at different sizes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Extensive UX experience, such as onboarding flows.

  • The more knowledge of product design and UX, the better.

  • Understanding of accessibility needs such as color blindness and low vision.

  • Experience with animating UI elements.

  • Experience with Figma or similar user interface design tools.

  • Video editing experience.

Further details

  • Remote position.

  • Retainer-based, open-ended contract.

  • Minimum of 20 hours of paid time per week. We are flexible and can increase this up to 35 hours, depending on your needs.

  • Above-market compensation.

  • Flexible working hours. Ideally work a few hours most workdays, so that spontaneous interactions are possible.

  • Regularly scheduled meetings each week.

  • Working from a time zone that is +/- 2 hours from Berlin, Germany.
