The Challenge
You will be joining a fast-paced engineering team made up of people with significant experience working with terabytes of data. We believe that everybody has something to bring to the table, and therefore put collaborative effort and team-work above all else (and not just from an engineering perspective).
You will be able to work autonomously as an equally trusted member of the team, and participate in efforts such as:
- Addressing high availability problems: cross-region data replication, disaster recovery, etc.
- Addressing “big data” problems: 200+ millions of messages/day, 160B data points since 2010 (currently growing at a rate of 10B per month).
- Improving our development workflow, continuous integration, continuous delivery and in a broader sense our team practices
- Expanding our platform’s observability through monitoring, logging, alerting and tracing
What you’ll doing
- Deploy, maintain, evolve our infrastructures (we have 2 autonomous regions) for optimum data consistency, availability while keeping costs down
- Automate what is not, fix what’s needed, providing ideas
- Adapt fast
Our tech stack
- Alerting: AlertManager, Karma, PagerDuty
- Logging: Vector, Loki
- Caching: FoundationDB
- Secrets management and PKI: Vault
- Configuration management and provisioning: Terraform, Ansible
- Service discovery: Consul
- Messaging: Kafka
- Proxying: HAProxy, Traefik
- Service deployment: Terraform, Nomad (plugged in Consul and Vault)
- Database systems: ClickHouse (main datastore), FoundationDB (caching, deduplication), replicated PostgreSQL
- Operating System: Ubuntu 20.04
- Protocols: gRPC, HTTP (phasing out in favor of gRPC), WebSocket (phasing out in favor of gRPC)
- Platform: containers
About You
- Significant experience as a DevOps/System Engineer
- Experienced about Linux system admin, automation (ansible at a minimum)
- Worked with, in no particular order: troubleshooting crashes & performance issues, load-balancing, VIPs/fail-over IPs, RAID
You’ll notice that we don’t have any “hard” requirements in terms of development platforms or technologies: this is because we are primarily interested in people capable of adapting to an ever changing landscape of technical requirements, who learn fast and are not afraid to constantly push our technical boundaries.
It is not uncommon for us to benchmark new technologies for a specific feature, or to change our infrastructure in a big way to better suit our needs.
The most important skills for us revolve around two things:
- What we like to call “core” knowledge: what’s a software process, how does it interact with a machine’s or the network’s resources, what kind of constraints can we expect for certain workloads, etc
- How fast you can adapt to a technology you didn’t know existed 10 minutes ago
In short, we are looking for someone able to spot early on that spending 10 days to migrate data to a more efficient schema is the better solution compared to scaling out a database cluster in a matter of minutes if we are looking to improve performance in the long term.
Nice to have
- Experience with HashiCorp tools (terraform, vault, consul, nomad)
- Experience with orchestrating containers, micro-services

Diversity & Inclusion
At Kaiko, we believe in the ersity of thought because we appreciate that this makes us stronger. Therefore, we encourage applications from everyone who can offer their unique experience to our collective achievements.

- Design, develop and deploy scalable and observable backend microservices
- Reflect on our storage, querying and aggregation capabilities, as well as the technologies required to meet our objectives
- Work hand-in-hand with the business team on developing new features, addressing issues and extending the platform
Our tech stack
- Monitoring: VictoriaMetrics, Grafana
- Alerting: AlertManager, Karma, PagerDuty
- Logging: Vector, Loki
- Caching: FoundationDB, Redis
- Secrets management and PKI: Vault
- Configuration management and provisioning: Terraform, Ansible
- Service discovery: Consul
- Messaging: Kafka
- Proxying: HAProxy, Traefik
- Service deployment: Terraform, Nomad (plugged in Consul and Vault), Kubernetes (to a lesser extent, used for non production critical workloads)
- Database systems: ClickHouse (main datastore), PostgreSQL (ACID workloads)
- Protocols: gRPC, HTTP (phasing out in favor of gRPC), WebSocket (phasing out in favor of gRPC)
- Platforms (packaged in containers): Golang, NodeJS (phasing out in favor of Golang), Ruby (phasing out in favor of Golang)
About You
- Significant experience as a Software/Data/DevOps Engineer
- Knowledgeable about data ingestion pipelines and massive data querying
- Worked with, in no particular order: microservices architecture, infrastructure as a code, self-managed services (eg. deploy and maintain our own databases), distributed services, server-side development, etc
Nice to have
- Experience with data scraping over HTTP, WebSocket, and/or FIX Protocol
- Experience developing financial product methodologies for indices, reference rates, and exchange rates
- Knowledgeable about the technicalities of financial market data, such as the difference between: calls, puts, straddles, different types of bonds, swaps, CFD, CDS, options, futures, etc
Personal Skills
- Honest: receiving and giving feedback is very important to you
- Humble: making new errors is an essential part of your journey
- Empathetic: you feel a sense of responsibility for all the team’s endeavors rather than focus on inidual contributions
- Committed: as an equally important member of the team, you want to make yourself heard while respecting everybody’s point of view
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- You have the utmost respect for legacy code and infrastructure, with some occasional and perfectly understandable respectful complaints

Note: This Senior Security Engineer role is in-office. If you can't see yourself relocating, please skip this ad!
Novel problems and challenging technical tasks in a cutting edge field within the blockchain sector Open and friendly culture with regular informal activities Flat(ish) organisation structure with open and collaborative attitudes Though we may be a startup, 60 hour weeks are not the norm 4 years of runway with future fundraising scheduled 2 week iteration cycle and in-person PR reviews Our engineering motto is “Do it right, do it once.” - we care about planning and writing code that won’t need to be rewritten later on The Job is in-office in Berlin, with WFH days and flexibility, and a geat new office environment in a light filled private warehouse conversion. Visa sponsorship & Relocation packages available You can read more about Chainflip Labs and the team culture here: https://blog.chainflip.io/join-us/
What do we do?
Chainflip is a blockchain project that uses multi-party-computation and threshold signature schemes to allow our decentralised validator network to secure assets across multiple arbitrarily differentiated blockchain networks, with the ultimate goal of allowing users to swap between various cryptocurrencies across multiple blockchains in a trustless and programmatic way.
This is a very tightly coupled engineering challenge, one that we’ve been working on for over a year. It is a multidisciplinary exercise in distributed systems, decentralised finance, blockchain consensus mechanisms, cyber security, applied cryptography, and front end tooling. Our engineering team of 20 is on the lookout for additional people to tackle this challenge with us. We’re mostly based in Berlin, Germany.
What’s the Job?
This role is open to a senior software engineer who wants to work in Rust and lead an internal secuirty team tasked with taking an adversarial view of our codebase and protocol. Experience in a similar C based programming language, such as C++, or any strictly typed language is required, but the role is mainly focused around key security related epereince such as auditing, penetration testing, fuzzing, server hardening, and so forth. Apparently we are one of the few companies in Europe who have built the entire software backend in Rust from day one, so that's neat.
There are three main areas for the internal security team to address:
The State Chain: we are developing our own standalone blockchain using the substrate blockchain development framework (https://substrate.io). Previous experience of working with complex type systems would be beneficial here, as would some knowledge of how blockchains work internally. The Chainflip Engine: this application works in tandem with the State Chain to power our decentralised threshold signature protocol, and to witness events happening in the outside world. An in-depth knowledge of the challenges of distributed systems, cryptography, and Rust's async features (specifically the tokio stack) would be great to have. Tools and Testing: Security and robustness of our network will be paramount. We need to provide secure and user-friendly tools for our validators to manage their nodes, and we need to be confident our nodes function according to protocol specifications. Knowledge of security best-practices and/or a pedantic and exhaustive attitude to testing would be a big plus here.
No matter which team you join, you will be exposed to all of the tough problems and trade-offs that decentralised finance and blockchains have to offer.
About the Rest of the Company
We are a Berlin-centric team with our own office space in the heart of Kreuzberg, but we have remote workers throughout Europe, a new office in Dublin, and a team in Melbourne, Australia. We meet up as a whole team twice a year, have a very open and flexible culture, and enjoy meaningful personal connections with one another. Our team has a erse range of backgrounds and experiences to share, and hopefully you'll be able to share yours with us too.
Our growing engineering team is run by the prolific CTO Tom Nash, an experienced founder and CTO with plenty of blockchain related engineering and leadership experience. With him, the Rust, Web, and Devops team lead the charge on all things technical for Chainflip. The company is led by CEO Simon Harman, and he works closely with half a dozen operations and communications staff in Berlin and abroad to power the team and it's product goals.
Who Should Apply?
If you’re based in Berlin or are willing to relocate to Berlin, have at least 6 years of professional experience as a software engineer with skills in any strictly typed language, want to pursue unique and challenging security problems, mentor and lead a small team within an existing startup, and are excited about new and exciting challenges that will push the boundaries of your knowledge in software, this is the role for you.
Salaries and Token packages are on offer that are commensurate with skill and experience. Please indicate your expected salary range when applying, and we will take that into consideration during the interview process.
The Process
Please submit your CV for review. A screening call will be conducted by our operations manager. For our engineering or technical roles, the next stage is a 1hr remote real-time code interview run by our existing engineering team in a language of your choice. Following this you will have a more informal meeting with some other members of the team, including the CTO. From there, if successful, a final review with the CEO will take place. This whole process can take as little as 1 week for the right candidates. Chainflip focuses on Bitcoin, Cryptocurrency, Blockchains, and Blockchain / Cryptocurrency. Their company has offices in Berlin. They have a small team that's between 11-50 employees. You can view their website at https://chainflip.io/
