I have long relied on using Heroku as a platform as a service, but as the company is growing we need your expertise in running a world-class operation. This is where you come in.

I am looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join a small team and make a big impact.

We already have the absolute best platform out there for home improvement contractors. Our customers love our software and the support they receive from us. Yet, there is more to be done using your experience to improve and further mature our tech stack and operations.

This is a full-time and long-term position that is 100% remote. All of our meetings, as well as any meetings with customers, will be conducted remotely, mostly over Zoom. You will need to work during or close to US East Coast business hours. Currently, we try to meet as an entire company for an off-site retreat at least once per year and would cover your expenses to join us.

Responsibilities and Day-to-Day

We are a small and scrappy company, so you will need to wear a few different hats. Flexibility and adaptability are key traits that you will need to possess to be successful in this role.

Your first priority in this role will be site stability. You will be proactive in minimizing software failures and reducing the lead time between fixes. We are currently running Java Spring on Heroku with AngularJS frontend connected to a multi-tenant PostgreSQL database. The app is instrumented with Sentry, NewRelic, and Librato with aggregated logs through Papertrail.

Your next priority will be helping to speed up the different aspects of developing, testing and releasing software. We run a Kanban-like process with weekly releases using GitHub Actions for our automated pipelines.

In addition to these top two priorities, you may also be asked to interact directly with our service partners over email, phone, and Zoom meetings. These types of interactions would typically be required for assessing new integrations or trouble-shooting existing connectivity.

Finally, I will be looking for you to play a role in the future direction of the platform. I will look for your input on migration of our platform from Heroku to our new cloud hosted home as well as system architecture, monitoring, and scaling cost-effectively. This truly is a great opportunity to have a lot of influence on the future of the software and the business.

Requirements

In this role, you will need to take ownership and responsibility of the platform - you will shape and lead the direction of our entire cloud operations. You will be given all of the tools and support to be successful without being told what to do every step of the way. If this appeals to you, then this may be the perfect position for you.

You implement secure, long-term solutions through simplification and automation.

You have 5+ years of experience in a DevOps role working in a cloud hosted environment (AWS, GCP, Azure, Heroku, Render, etc.).

You must have a reliable and fast internet connection with at least 50 Mb/s download and 10 Mb/s upload speed. That should be the actual speed based on how you connect, not the theoretical speed that your ISP advertises.

We will then narrow the pool to less than 20 applicants, and there'll be a small technical task to complete. We will pay $200 AUD to each applicant that completes the task to help compensate for the time spent. We expect this task will take you approximately 6 hours, so please make sure you're prepared to spend that time before applying. You'll have support from us while you’re working on this task, just like you would if you got the job here. We want to replicate what it's like to work with you as best we can.

From the tasks, we will select just a few to video chat with people from a range of roles on our team (support, developers, etc.) to help us make the final choice.

Finally, the exciting part for us, and those that are chosen: we'll hire someone! That will happen fast, and the start date will be chosen by the applicant.

We know it's quite a process to go through, so we want to make sure you know what you're in for upfront. It's important that you can make an informed decision to participate or not. We'll be transparent with everyone along the way.

About the role

We’re looking for a senior platform engineer to architect, develop and manage our infrastructure. Along with the other members of our platform team you will be responsible for the reliability, security and scalability of our infrastructure.

You will have strong practical experience with AWS, Docker and Terraform. You have real world experience with real-time, event-driven data pipelines and technologies such as Kafka. You have experience in scaling SQL-based data stores such as PostgreSQL (Amazon RDS, Aurora).

You will be on call as part of our platform team rotation. We have platform team members in the USA and in Australia and your rotation will generally be during standard daylight working hours CET. You will be on call during weekends (and your compensation will reflect this).

Responsibilities

Implement changes that improve the stability and reliability of our existing platform. Think ahead and build for the future as opposed to bandaid fixes for today. We aim to balance “getting things done” with work that improves our velocity and long-term outcomes.

Build robust, easy-to-use foundational platforms and tools that enable engineering teams to provision services rapidly, consistently, and securely.

Job Description:

Reporting to the Applications Manager, The Full-Stack Web Developer is responsible for the development, support, maintenance, and testing of web applications at Holy Cross. Hi, I'm Ajay, and I run GMass, a popular email automation platform. We've grown every single year and we're finally at the point where I want to offload the handling of our email deliverability work onto someone else.

Want to ease my workload?

This is a technical role that requires a deep understanding of how email is sent and received. You should already be an expert with SMTP, SPF, DKIM, and DMARC. It's strange, because I've interviewed dozens of candidates over the years who claim these protocols on their resume but then can't answer even the most fundamental questions about email authentication.

You should understand the factors that affect email deliverability and how to resolve them or work around them. GMass sends 5-7 million emails daily on behalf of tens of thousands of daily active users, and it will be your job to ensure that every single one of them lands in the Inbox.

Just kidding! If anyone ever requires that of you, run far away.

Issues we encounter on a regular basis:

A user is claiming that it's our fault that their emails are going to Spam. Is it actually our fault?

A domain or IP has been blacklisted. Need to figure out a solution.

We've received an abuse complaint AWS, and we have 24 hours to respond or they start shutting down our EC2 instances.

A domain used for click tracking has ended up on the Google Safe Browsing list. Uh oh, the red screen of death!

The SendGrid compliance department says our mail stream doesn't conform to their policies.

Technical skills that you should have:

You have a deep understanding of how email is sent.

You should understand the SMTP protocol.

You should have a thorough understanding of email authentication protocols like SPF, DKIM, and DMARC.

You understand the DNS system and its impact on email.

You know how to query databases. You don't need to be a full fledged DBA, but the more SQL you know, the better, because then you can analyze deliverability trends across the whole system.

You understand Inbox vs Promotions vs Spam placement and factors that impact it.

You've worked with transactional email services like SendGrid, Mailgun, Mandrill, and Amazon SES.

What would make you a dream candidate

You've demonstrated thought leadership and original insight into email deliverability issues. You regularly publish your thoughts. You've been a postmaster for an Email Service Provider before. Your writing is so good that we are comfortable sending your article to our 1M+ user list.

What probably doesn't make you qualified

You've run a mail server out of your basement where you've hosted email for family and friends. While that gives you some understanding of email servers, it doesn't give you the deep experience needed for troubleshooting delivery issues and coming up with creative solutions to blocking. Long gone are the days where to unblock an IP, you just fill out a form on the blacklist's site and voila! -- problem solved.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Receives allegations of security incidents and conducts complex investigations according to incident response plan. Prepares written findings, recommendations and follow-up evaluation. Analyzes patterns and trends.

Acts as an advocate for disputes, requests for exceptions and complaints regarding Company-wide information systems security policies, practices and related issues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Hard Skills:

5+ years of progressive experience in information security, recovery planning and testing, compliance, risk analysis, or auditing.

Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, or related area.

Soft Skills:

Excellent business communication skills (both oral and written).

Outstanding organizational, analytical, and troubleshooting skills,

Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of iniduals and constituencies in a erse community.

Key Responsibilities**

Acts as the primary contact point in the USEU for IT needs and support, and coordinates advice back to the team on technical support matters.

Performs Apple Mac deployments, diagnostics, maintenance/repairs and supports escalation of repairs to Apple.

We are planning to overhaul our VPN infrastructure with a new server build to radically improve the transparency of our service. We are looking for an experienced infrastructure engineer who is excited by the opportunity to build a secure, high performance network of VPN servers from the ground-up using open-source software and many layers of security technologies.

The position is fully remote with high level of autonomy and requires that you thrive in this type of environment.

What you will work on**

You will help research and develop a new server architecture for our VPN gateways that is open, immutable, diskless and secure. You will be expected to design this from the ground up whilst consulting with various members of our team.

When the build is ready for production, you will be responsible for the initial provisioning of servers, from procurement to building and final distribution to data centers. Depending on the requirements, we will hire additional staff to assist with this stage, ie. travel might not be required.

Once the new infrastructure is in production, it will operate in parallel with our existing one, until it has proven itself and we have a clear migration path. You will be expected to work together with our existing infrastructure team on this migration, and will be responsible for managing and improving the infrastructure going forward.

Hi, I'm Ajay, and I'm tired.

For the past seven years, I've been managing 75 servers across AWS, a dozen more at various other providers, trying to keep my users' emails out of Spam, studying SPF and DMARC records, fighting with my overloaded IIS servers, tuning ridiculously complex SQL queries, figuring out how to stop my 5 TB database from growing so fast, all the while building new features and fixing bugs for my SaaS platform.

I run GMass, a popular email automation platform. We've grown every single year and we're finally at the point where I want to offload the management of our systems onto someone else.

Want to ease my pain?

First, let me tell you about the tech environment GMass is built on. 90% of our infrastructure is hosted at AWS, and 10% is hosted across several more traditional hosting companies. In total, there are about 85 servers, including lots of IIS web servers, a couple SQL Servers, one MySQL server, and a bunch of SMTP servers. Most of our backend code is in C#/.NET Standard, but our front-end, which is a Chrome extension, is JavaScript.

The overarching goals of this position is to make sure GMass is always up and running and emails are getting delivered in a timely manner.

Issues we encounter on a regular basis:

Our senders are overwhelmed and sending too slowly. Need to fire up some more servers.

A domain or IP has been blacklisted. Need to figure out a workaround.

An IIS server isn't responding fast enough. Diagnose.

A disk on a critical server is about to fill up.

An abuser has penetrated our network and needs to be stopped.

We've received an abuse complaint from an upstream provider, and we have 24 hours to respond.

Technical skills that you should have:

You have a deep understanding of how email is sent

You know how to manage an IIS server

You know how to query databases. You don't need to be a full fledged DBA, but the more you know, the better.

You understand email deliverability and factors that impact it.

You have a thorough understanding of the DNS system.

You're already familiar with AWS.

There's an element of email deliverability to this role. You should be well versed in these protocols:

DMARC

SMTP

Bonus points if you've worked with transactional email services like SendGrid, Mailgun, Mandrill, and Amazon SES.

DevOps?

Merchstack is looking for a CloudOps Engineer to join our team. You will work to improve upon tools and automation that accelerate the engineering teams’ velocity, improve their developer experience, and reduce their cognitive load. You’ll recommend and implement changes to existing technology, evaluate new technologies, respond to production issues that arise, be challenged with complex problems to solve, and contribute to our technological direction.

To succeed in this role, you will need a breadth of experience, an attention to detail, a no-nonsense approach to security best practice, excellent communication skills, and a practical, non-dogmatic approach to problem-solving.

Operate and maintain an existing production kubernetes cluster and its associated cloud resources.

Experience with Transit Gateways, IPSEC is a plus.

Detailed understanding of core concepts for Kubernetes APIs and cluster architecture, as well as services and networking.

Experience with GitOps tooling such as Flux is a plus.
