Senior Web Engineer, Activation (Ruby)
London, UK (Remote)
Our everyday digital experiences are in the midst of a realtime revolution. Whether attending an event in a virtual venue, receiving realtime financial information, or working with colleagues in an online collaborative environment – consumers simply expect realtime digital experiences as standard. At Ably we’re not just witnessing this revolution – we’re powering it.
At the heart of our mission lies a commitment to putting developers first. Ably provides a suite of APIs to build, extend, and deliver powerful digital experiences in realtime, delivering billions of messages for millions of devices every day and supporting organizations like Split, Hubspot, Toyota and Genius Sports.
Working at Ably means helping to build the infrastructure and technology that will power and shape the future of the internet. The opportunity in front of us is immense. And we’d like your help.
About this role
You will be responsible for helping shape the future of our frontends, making decisions that have a long lasting impact by building and delivering improvements and new features to our documentation, customer dashboards, and internal tools.
You’ll be working closely with our Product and Design teams towards achieving the strategic goals of the company, with a core focus on improving the journey for developers who sign up to using Ably. You’ll also work with people all across Ably as the projects we work on touch many different parts of the company.
Day to day you will
- Create real value for Ably. You’ll be a key member of the Activation mission, contributing to strategic initiatives that drive developers to the Ably website, as well as increase sign ups and engagement over time.
- Deliver quality code. You’ll be hands-on with development to build and deliver improvements and new features to Ably’s customer-facing and internal frontends.
- Level up your team. You’ll be helping steer the direction of our frontends, including our component library, used by multiple teams to deliver a consistent identity for Ably no matter where people see us online.
- Collaborate effectively. You’ll be working closely with our Product & Design teams towards achieving the strategic goals of the company. You’ll also work with people all across Ably as the projects we work on touch many different parts of the company.
- Focus on continual improvement. Whether it’s deliberately refactoring code to make our lives easier or updating our processes to be more effective, you’ll work to improve frontend development through improved engineering practices.
- Develop effective testing strategies. You’ll be expected to test your own work, leaning on automation as much as possible. You’ll constantly influence how we can improve our testing setup, helping the team unlock more potential along the way. When needed you’ll walk your team members and stakeholders through how to best test your work before it goes into production.
More generally you will
- Handle security disclosures. We have an active vulnerability disclosure program, and from time to time you’ll be responsible for helping to resolve some extremely creative reports from security researchers.
- Support internal users. We help support our internal users when they have issues with our systems, or if they can’t help resolve a customer issue without our intervention.
- Take responsibility for general maintenance. You’ll review and handle dependency updates from Dependabot (both security and general, we like to stay fresh). Deal with Sentry reports that are affecting customers.
We’d love to hear from you if you have
- Strong Ruby & Ruby on Rails skills and significant professional experience using these technologies.
- Proficiency with modern HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Our frontends are a mix of technologies, and you’ll be supported by great frontend developers.
- A full-stack mindset and experience building full-stack applications with CI/CD, as well as understand and promote the importance of the latter.
- Experience with writing automated tests for software with tools like RSpec, Cypress (or Capybara/Cucumber).
- Cross-functional team experience. You have worked closely with designers and product managers in short, effective feedback loops.
- A solid grasp of Agile, Kanban and SCRUM principles and experience working with stakeholders to create and manage backlogs and delivery of work.
- Experience in dynamic, early stage startups where adaptability and resourcefulness are crucial.
- A transparent and collaborative build in the open mindset.
It would be great, but not essential if you have
- Experience delivering developer-focussed products or services.
- Experience with products or services that are brought to market primarily through a product led growth approach.
- Experience with modern frameworks such as React, Gatsby & TailwindCSS.
- Experience with OpenAPI (Swagger) for customer-facing APIs.
- Experience debugging in production on platforms like Heroku or Kubernetes.

Engineering
Full-Time
Your work as a Sr. Backend Engineer will empower thousands of Appcues customers to improve their SaaS products with unique in-app experiences such as onboarding guides, checklists, and surveys, without writing any code. Our customers, such as Codepen, Lyft and Segment, depend on our services to deliver these in-app experiences to 100s of millions of users. This role is a unique opportunity to join a small, senior team designing, building, and operating modern services at scale
Tools we use
-
- On any given project, you will develop or refactor distributed Elixir or Node services and provision, tune, and manage data in DynamoDB, PostgreSQL, or whatever is needed. You’ll work with AWS and Linux to manage and update production systems.
- Our team follows a Kanban flow using Clubhouse.io to track our work. We communicate via Github, Slack, and Zoom, and are committed to remote, agile development.
- When you are ready, you’ll create and send a pull request with tests and tag your team for review. We use CircleCI to deploy to production and continuously invest in our pipelines and staging environments to make them more robust.
- Every engineer is given ample opportunity to learn the Appcues product and codebase, with continual opportunities to demonstrate your abilities.
About the role
-
- The engineering team currently has 38 people across all of our teams. We are looking to hire a Senior Backend Engineer for our platform team.
- Our Platform team is responsible for crafting scalable services that handle millions of requests from our customer’s SaaS products. They also manage RESTful APIs that process requests from our customer-facing React applications for personalization, segmentation, and targeting. The team collaborates to instrument and monitor the performance and availability of the Appcues platform.
- On a typical day, you may build a feature, tune a data pipeline, plan a technology migration, add a 3rd party integration, help diagnose a customer issue, drive consensus on a new practice, or collaborate with another engineer.
- Our engineers are involved in all development stages, including conception, design, and user-testing, with an eye toward rapid, agile iteration. You’ll collaborate with engineers across teams to develop new capabilities in our platform.
- You’ll collaborate across the organization with design, customer success, technical support, and sales to translate customer needs into high-quality code.
About you
-
- You are energized by working in a highly collaborative environment at a customer-driven startup. You see software engineering as a team sport and like collaborating with fellow engineers, product managers, and others to deliver customer value.
- You have experience in a similar SaaS company, preferably taking ownership over the build/deploy/infrastructure.
- You have contributed to the delivery of large backend projects. For example, systems that ingest and process data at a significant scale, manage elastic workloads using queue/worker/streaming architectures, or migrate to more current technologies while maintaining high availability.
- You have experience with functional programming or a desire to learn. We can teach you Elixir, which is the foundation of most of our Platform services.
- You have sound judgment across back-end frameworks and are familiar with various databases and data processing technologies. You are pragmatic, not dogmatic, and are aware of the strengths & weaknesses of your tools.
- You enjoy breaking down complex problems into small tasks and PRs to deliver value safely and incrementally.
- You consider testing, monitoring, and observability first-order priorities. You believe your work isn’t complete until your code runs in production and returns the results and metrics you expect.
- You can comfortably work 9-5 Eastern Time. While we are a 100% remote-1st company and you can connect from anywhere, we require 8 hours overlap to collaborate effectively with the rest of our team members who work these hours.
$133,000 – $165,000 a year
