The position

We're looking for a seasoned full-stack engineer who's excited to join a small team and take ownership over the codebase. As one of 3 engineers you'll get exposure to every part of our stack, from creating pixel-perfect UIs to tweaking our API for performance.

You'll work on improving our existing resume builder, creating/ owning brand new products (think: cover letter generator, job application tracker, etc), improving the codebase overall, and loads of other stuff.

Implement an AI-powered resume grader to let people know what's working and what's not on their resumes

Create a brand new product from end-to-end to recommend jobs to candidates that come to our platform and make it easy for them to apply

Architect scalable low-latency backend systems and data pipelines. Write code as needed to support the team.

New multi-year funding has been awarded to expand the scope and reach of this software. This work will involve transitioning our existing desktop apps to a cloud-based platform, developing extensive new features to increase accessibility, and designing an open API for integration into data analysis workflows.

We are looking to recruit a full stack developer on a contractor basis to assist with this work.

Our ideal candidate for this role will be a creative problem-solver with a keen eye for design, who can work efficiently across the stack to deliver high-quality implementations in response to a specification. Above all, we’re looking for someone passionate about using their advanced technical skills to develop open-source digital tools with social impact, within a small and eclectic team.
This is a fully remote contracted role. Opportunity to extend the contract will be based on performance, the ongoing availability of funding, and business need.

Job Activities:

You will participate as a technical expert in key decision-making early in the project, establishing our tech stack and bootstrapping our development.

You will be responsible for the specification, design and implementation of multiple complex features, with the overall aim of facilitating the development of a new cloud-based survey platform.

Strong design skills, with a focus on the ability to design polished, accessible user-interfaces.

Experience with TypeScript, ideally including creation of types for consumption by third parties.

Knowledge of ORMs, SQL, and cloud database providers.

Proven record of working within a remote team, and taking ownership of feature design and implementation.

About the Role

Hungryroot is looking for a Lead Frontend Software Engineer to join our growing Engineering Team. This inidual will directly manage and grow our Web team. They will take on full ownership of our React-based web application powering our Hungryroot.com e-commerce site. This includes our homepage, quiz funnel, checkout and all post-checkout shopping as well as order and account management experience. The lead will also act as an intimate partner to our product, design and QA team in the planning and execution of our regular feature release cycles. It is expected that the lead will be hands-on, and spend a good portion of time personally contributing via code along with carrying the duties of being a people-manager.

Responsibilities

Take ownership and direction of our frontend React-based web application. Reliably and safely launch new features while continuing to improve our existing codebase.
Work closely with the product and QA team to iterate on feature designs, review technical specs, confirm dev estimation, triage bugs and manage release cycles.
Drive high execution velocity while maintaining good software quality, and help the team appropriately balance between the two based on the nature of projects and circumstances.
Regularly provide your team with candid and actionable feedback based on their inidual performance. Pay attention to their professional aspirations and facilitate career growth.
Facilitate technical discussions and drive critical decisions. Be a sounding board to veteran engineers and subject matter experts. Build consensus where possible and arbitrate disagreements when necessary.

Qualifications

8+ yrs of commercial software development experience. (Experience in developing ecommerce-related web applications is a huge plus.)

2+ yrs successfully leading, hiring and managing a team of engineers.
Strong foundation of software engineering in general, both theory and practice. Understand important programming concepts, patterns and pitfalls.

Strong experience implementing observability for comprehensive production monitoring of web apps.

As a Software Engineer at Samsara, you will design and develop features across a broad surface area with a tangible impact on active and future customers. Compensation Expectations for the Role

Jane’s committed to paying our team members fairly, clearly, and above all, paying for growth. This role has a minimum annual salary of $90,000 and a maximum annual salary of $135,000. As you may have noticed, this salary range is quite large, and this is intentional to account for the growth someone will experience in the role throughout their time at Jane (i.e., from building the skills, to accomplished, to highly proficient, all the way to achieving excellence in the role). When hiring talented folks to join the Jane team, we’ve found that new team members are best set up for success when hired with the expectation of being fully accomplished in the role, which for this role would reflect a salary between $106,900 to $112,500. It’s also possible to join Jane at a salary above or below this, which would mean a salary below $106,900 typically reflects someone who has all the potential to be fully accomplished in the role but doesn’t yet possess all the skills required, while a salary above $112,500 is typically for iniduals who are currently in this role at Jane and had the opportunity to make a significant positive impact on our customers, product and company with deep Jane knowledge. Interview Journey

We offer a relaxed environment at Jane, if you need to stretch during your interview, use a stand-up desk, or attend to personal matters like letting your barking dog out, that’s fine. We also have a casual dress code.
Our hiring process consists of a 45-minute Zoom call with our recruiter, where they will discuss your background, motivations, and provide information about the role, Jane, compensation, and benefits.
Next, there will be a 1-hour interview with the hiring manager, ing deeper into your experience and motivations, with a mix of technical and non-technical questions.
You will be given a take-home assignment, assuming you are selected, which can be completed in Java, Ruby, Python, C#, and Go. Please note that the repository for this assignment will be deleted and not used internally or in production.
Following that, there will be a 60 minute technical interview
The final round will be a 60 minute interview focusing on project, customer, and values.
Afterward, our team will hold a debriefing session to discuss their feedback. To mitigate bias, feedback is not discussed among team members until this meeting.
Throughout the process, your recruiter will provide regular check-ins, updates, and feedback. Assuming all goes well, we will then proceed to the offer and reference check stage. If we decide to keep in touch in the future, you’ll be provided with detailed feedback as to why.
