Organizational Setting:

For more than four decades, FAO has been working with the Government of the Philippines, civil society, community based organizations, and the private sector to address challenges in the agriculture, fisheries and forestry sector. Joint efforts have included increasing sustainability in agricultural production, promoting value adding practices, improving post harvest management, enhancing productivity, and increasing the resilience of agriculture based livelihoods to natural disasters, climatic hazards and armed conflict.

Reporting Lines:

The Manuscript Editor and Graphic Designer reports directly to the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme).

Technical Focus:

FAO is implementing a Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) on enhancing farm tourism development in the Philippines for inclusive rural development. This is through capacity building of public and private stakeholders to set up and implement sustainable farm tourism enterprises, which will help achieve agricultural ersification, sustainable agricultural production and inclusive agro business development. The project will also support the establishment of pilot sites on designing farm tourism sites and their related infrastructures, on establishing and operating social enterprises, and on developing farm tourism camp designs and activities.

Tasks and responsibilities

Under the general supervision and guidance of the Assistant FAO Representative (Programme), the Manuscript Editor and Graphic Designer will carry out substantive editing of the draft publications for the Farm Tourism Development Plans for Pilot Sites and Farm Tourism Development Training Manual to ensure the technical accuracy of the work. In particular, the Manuscript Editor and Graphic Designer will:

  • Liaison with the Office of Communication (OCC) will be maintained, either directly or through an agreed focal point/coordinator, to ensure compliance with OCC standards, appropriate review and clearance processes.

As Manuscript Editor, review and revise the developed plans and manuals related to the farm tourism development project, specifically:

  • review text and identify errors related to the use of technical terms or adherence to the specific technical topic, in line with the highest academic standards on the topic;
  • substantively edit text to address the accuracy, unity, integrity, and completeness of the technical information and to ensure that it is intelligible to the intended audience;
  • check for internal consistency of text, data, figures (including maps), tables and boxes;
  • check for crossreferences and consistency of references in the text against the bibliographic reference list;
  • check for appropriateness of photos (including captions and copyright) used in the document, bearing in mind relevance to content, gender and geographical balance;
  • correct grammatical errors, spelling mistakes and typos;
  • improve the structure, argument and presentation of facts avoiding redundancies;
  • package the plans and manual with improved style, flow, clarity and quality of the language and readability;
  • enhance the focus and strength of the key messages;
  • regularly consult the FAO Terminology portal http://www.fao.org/faoterm/en/ to ensure compliance with FAO standards on the specific technical matter, FAO country names portal http://termportal.fao.org/faonocs/appl/, Publishing at FAO – Strategy and guidance, etc.), and ensure that FAOSTYLE has been applied in the project’s developed plans and manuals;
  • flag any problems that require decisions relating to the substance of the work and ensuring its technical accuracy;
  • deliver edited text, in Word in trackchanges mode as well as a clean version including: all objects (tables, figures, boxes, photos, etc.), their numbering and crossreference in text (use of Word captions/crossreference function for automatic renumbering of objects); document structure (heading levels to be clearly differentiated using heading styles,); references and bibliography (verify accuracy and make corrections); list of acronyms; numbers in general (use of nonbreaking space for thousands, etc.); and
  • performing two rounds of corrections of the manuscript following isional checks

As Graphic Designer, design and layout the developed plans and manuals related to the farm tourism development project, specifically:

  • create functional and clear templates that can convey the product’s message without interfering with it;
  • identify and develop an overall layout that suits the product type;
  • ensure that the layout fits the intended audience (from a technical, professional, and cultural standpoint);
  • submit three design proposals, for the supervisor’s final approval;
  • transcribe or import blocks of text (including boxes, tables, etc.) into page layout;
  • use paragraph styles to format text;
  • redesign charts and figures in high resolution (vector) and optimize photos (provided by originators) using the right format, to make sure they comply with high printing and/or web standards; and
  • performing three rounds of corrections following OCC/PWS and isional quality checks; rounds of corrections are to be increased should the Consultant overlook corrections;
  • Prepare and submit progress reports for activities undertaken;
  • Prepare and submit an endofassignment report in English according to FAO’s guidelines; and
  • Perform other tasks that may be assigned by the FAO Representative.

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

  • The candidate must have a university degree (advanced degree preferred) in the field of fine arts, multimedia, media production, publishing, editing, translation, or related discipline;
  • At least five (5) years of cumulative relevant experience in academic, scientific, or technical writing, editing and publishing, and in graphic design particularly for technical reports, manuals, books and similar publications in conformance with branding policies of international development agencies;
  • National of the Philippines or resident in the country with a regular work permit;
  • Working knowledge of English and Filipino.

  • Familiarity with farm tourism sites in at least one region of the Philippines

  • General knowledge and skills in the use of standard office software, such as MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point) and in the use of computer systems including formatting and layout tools as well as documentation databases.
  • Language requirement: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and Filipino.
