At 8returns, we're transforming one of the most frustrating, environmentally damaging and costly aspects of e-commerce — returns. We built a technology that automates the returns process for retailers and makes data-driven decisions to connect each return to its next best use.
We're still in the scrappy startup phase, so we are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1, and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.
We have happy paying customers and just raised our first round of funding from industry leaders. Our team is highly experienced, and has started, scaled and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.
Who you are
- You worked remotely before, or know that you'd work well with a remote team.
- Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment
- 3+ years of experience developing high performance web applications
- Strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and experience designing maintainable systems, APIs, and integrations
- You are able to decide what aspects of products need to be perfected and when to cut corners to ship faster
The main app is built with Ruby on Rails and React. We use Postgres, Heroku, AWS. While previous experience with these technologies is a plus, we’re looking for someone with broad experience.
Why you might be excited about us
- We're working to solve a massive global problem - 10 billion pounds of returns end up in landfills every year and for retailers it’s a trillion-dollar problem.
- We're small, so you'll be able to contribute efficiently and without bureaucracy. You'll quickly have responsibility over big areas of our product. You'll also help build our company's culture.
- We don't have a ton of meetings. If we can effectively solve a problem asynchronously, we do. When we do meet synchronously, you'll always have the opportunity to contribute.
- You'll be able to work remotely and set your own schedule. We don't micro-manage and will help you do great work. Most of our engineers work EU hours, but organize their work day to be whatever's best for them.
- We will mould your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.
- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about family and your own personal development, and don't expect for you to be always engaged with work.
Why you might not be excited about us
- We're small (<10 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, it's not (yet) the right time. Since we're an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.
- Our customers love us, and there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but means there's some technical debt.
- We can't (yet) provide close mentorship for junior developers, especially as we're remote and small. As we grow, we'll get a lot better at this.
- Since you'll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You'll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.
If we think you might be a good fit, we'll respond within 48 hours.

- You’re a seasoned developer. You have multiple years of experience as an iOS developer shipping features for large-scale and real-time applications building consumer-facing products, and actively helping others to improve.
- You’re a product-minded engineer. You’ll embody this mindset by thinking about the bigger picture, using data to make informed decisions, and challenging what’s already there.
- You bring excellent attention to detail. You are meticulous and thorough in your work, and you leave no stone unturned. You put in time and effort to ensure your code is top-notch.
- You care about code quality. You enjoy working collaboratively with your peers and provide meaningful and timely feedback in code reviews.
- You have a sense of ownership. You believe in solving a problem entirely rather than simply shipping a solution. You operate autonomously and follow through on your commitments.
- You’re familiar with Apple’s app review process. You've already spent some time playing around with the App Store and getting to know Apple's guidelines.
How we work 🌍
- For this role, we ask you to be located adjacent to Eastern European Time (UTC ±0, UTC +1, or UTC +2).
- If you’re located outside this time zone range and want to move to the company’s official headquarters in Austria, we’ll handle the work permit process and cover travel expenses.
- If you prefer to work outside your home, we offer a physical location in Vienna and co-working stipends in other cities.
- We love working async so that you can set your own pace and schedule.

- 25 days of paid vacation in addition to your local public holidays and paid sick leave.
- We sponsor team retreats throughout Europe and remote-friendly activities, like hack weeks and coffee breaks.
- To further develop yourself, use our €1k growth budget for books, online courses, conferences, or anything else that supports your development.
- To give our menstruating team members the time off to cater to their health when needed during their menstrual cycle, we offer up to 2 days of paid menstrual leave per month.
- Your annual salary will range from €57k to €66k gross annually. Your salary will automatically increase by 5% every year. No questions asked.
- The chance to build a world-class product, positively impact millions of aspiring developers, and be a virtual owner of the company with equity (phantom stock).
Our 4-step hiring process, in a nutshell
- You’ll first have a video call with a member of the People team for a quick get-to-know chat.
- Then, you’ll be given a take-home challenge to work on. Don’t worry; we know you have many things on your plate, and good things take time. You won’t be given a deadline.
- Next up is the technical interview to show off your skills to the hiring manager.
- Lastly, you’ll meet your potential future peers for a laid-back conversation.
- If everything goes silky smooth, you’ll receive an offer from us shortly after. Fingers crossed 🤞

Title: Senior Software Engineer I, Front End – FDA (Remote Eligible)
Location: Bellevue, WA, USA
Do you love working on high visibility projects that improve the lives of both engineers and product end users? The Front-end Developer Experience and Architecture (FDA) team has a twofold charter: to build and maintain front-end tooling that empowers Smartsheet engineers, and to chart the course for how modern front-end products are built at Smartsheet that create engaging experiences our users love. This small, nimble, and scrappy team has done a lot of work since its inception: We’ve built CLIs that start teams off with fully functional build pipelines using Smartsheet’s modern UI stack that allow developers to focus on code, not build tools. We’ve created a reusable pattern for injecting state services into UI components and deployment tools to get that front-end code to production in hours instead of weeks. And we’re just getting started.
In 2005, Smartsheet was founded on the idea that teams and millions of people worldwide deserve a better way to deliver their very best work. Today, we deliver a leading cloud-based platform for work execution, empowering organizations to plan, capture, track, automate, and report on work at scale, resulting in more efficient processes and better business outcomes.
This position will report to the Senior Manager of Engineering and can be based remotely from anywhere within the United States where Smartsheet is a registered employer.
Our team focuses on distributed decision making that rewards ownership, transparency, and collaboration. Learn more about our platform here: Smartsheet Overview Video

- Be a technical leader on our team, contributing to and/or defining UI development best practices (code modularization, browser automation testing, linters, etc.)
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipeline implementations for tests, linting, deployment, etc.
- Take part in code reviews and architectural discussions as you work with other software engineers, UX designers and product managers
- Mentor junior engineers on code quality and other industry best practices
- Enhance existing application code with new features and strike a balance when making technical decisions (build vs refactor vs simplify)
You Have:
- 5+ years software development experience
- 5+ years experience in at least one modern object oriented programming language (Java, C#, Ruby, etc.)
- 2+ years experience in SaaS application development
- Experience with modern web technologies, front-end frameworks and integrating with back-end services
