We're looking for an early technical hire to join our small team. Our team values speed, ownership, work-life balance and making products that our customers love.
My cofounder and I have been working on our new business part-time for 6 months and are receiving signals of solution/market fit from customers. The product we've prototyped solves issues that have arisen in secondary and tertiary schools due to ChatGPT (and similar AI).
We've decided now is the time to bring someone on to help accelerate development and have budgeted for the role to last one year. We believe that the business will be profitable by year two and the role will be able to continue on (assuming a good fit).
We're looking for someone who wants to work 2-3 days a week at the moment, but will work hard for those days (20-30 hours). This could be ideal for a new parent, someone who is doing their own startup on the side, or someone who just wants more free-time.
About the job
You'll be building and maintaining features for our customers end-to-end using Rails 7, Turbo & Stimulus, tailwind-css, Redis, and PostgreSQL. This job requires exceptional front end skills as some of the user interfaces will have complex interactions that can only be created in JavaScript. There is also deep integrations with a relatively large and complex, albeit well architected, TypeScript library.
As a developer you'll prioritize shipping good quality elegant code very frequently. In order to do this you will make sure you there are enough tests that you can effectively refactor without fear, but not too many tests that they become brittle and hamper feature development. You'll also fight hard against over-engineering and participate in scope hammering to help keep things simple.
It will be your job in each 6 week cycle to focus deeply on one or more selected pitches and complete them within the specified timeframe (pitch appetite), scope will be the malleable factor that you play with to get things shipped.
Along with feature development you might sometimes be involved in building deployment tools, monitoring infrastructure, QA, and customer support. You'll also be invited to pitch each cycle and have your own ideas brought into the product.
We envision this role requiring 20-30 focused hours a week (negotiable based on salary expectations).
Here are some examples of the type of work you will likely have to do:
- Write and coordinate safe multi-step migrations
- Build and deploy the application
- Review others code and suggest enhancements
- Build simple, easy to use, responsive interfaces in Rails with progressive enhancement using Turbo / Stimulus.
- Write unit tests and system tests for new features
- Give input on architecture and simplifications that can be made
- Write custom JavaScript components that support more complex interactions like drag and drop, zoom, pan, etc.
- Debug software including tracking down performance issues
- Make refactorings to simplify feature development
- Write clear communicative asynchronous messages
- Collaborate 1:1 on design and user experience problems
- Improve deployment and infrastructure tooling
- Speak to customers or vendors to better understand the problem you're working on or to help with support issues
- Perform QA on features you've built
About you
We're looking for an experienced full-stack engineer that loves working with Rails 7 and Turbo. You should be able to back up your RoR, HTML, and CSS chops with strong JavaScript skills when the need arises. You should have solid fundamentals in linux, containerization, http networking, shell scripting, functional and imperative programming, SQL, ruby, rack, TLS, load balancing, query optimization, algorithmic complexity, and debugging.
To succeed you'll need to be a manager of one and take pride in your work. You must have strong intuition on usable elegant solutions and be good at collaborating without ego to find the best solution.
In the past you've built scalable distributed systems and understand the common pit-falls when building distributed systems. You are comfortable setting up deployment infrastructure fit for purpose and push back against unnecessary over-engineering – you don't believe every startup requires Kubernetes.
You read frequently and can confidently point to you favorite programming books. In addition to being a prolific reader, you enjoy writing and have strong writing skills.
You're comfortable getting on the phone with people and know that it's often the quickest way to get something done.
Finally, after thoughtful critical analysis, you subscribe to most of the 37 signals way of thinking about SaaS product development and business operations. This is incredibly important, as it is not the typical model for operating a software business, and you will find yourself questioning every decision if you're not already subscribed to many of their values and approaches. If you're not familiar with 37 signals, please at a minimum read ShapeUp and Getting Real before deciding whether this is right place for you.
Next Steps
If you're interested in the role, please send your resume and a thoughtful cover letter explaining why you're right for the role and what appeals to you about this role – without a thoughtfully written cover letter, expect no reply.
We look forward to reading your application!

Salary and compensation
$60,000 — $300,000/yearAt 8returns, we're transforming one of the most frustrating, environmentally damaging and costly aspects of e-commerce — returns. We built a technology that automates the returns process for retailers and makes data-driven decisions to connect each return to its next best use.
We're still in the scrappy startup phase, so we are looking for people who are comfortable with ambiguity and having wide impact. We've been remote-first since Day 1, and care a ton about communication, autonomy, curiosity, and initiative.
We have happy paying customers and just raised our first round of funding from industry leaders. Our team is highly experienced, and has started, scaled and sold companies before. We also love learning from each other, and are looking for people who bring a new set of experiences and backgrounds to our team.
Tasks
Why you might be excited about us
- We're working to solve a massive global problem - 10 billion pounds of returns end up in landfills every year and for retailers it’s a trillion-dollar problem.
- We're small, so you'll be able to contribute efficiently and without bureaucracy. You'll quickly have responsibility over big areas of our product. You'll also help build our company's culture.
- We don't have a ton of meetings. If we can effectively solve a problem asynchronously, we do. When we do meet synchronously, you'll always have the opportunity to contribute.
- You'll be able to work remotely and set your own schedule. We don't micro-manage and will help you do great work. Most of our engineers work EU hours, but organize their work day to be whatever's best for them.
- We will mould your role to shape a career you're excited about. We care a ton about your satisfaction and job happiness, and will help prep you for whatever you're looking for in the future.
- We work hard and also highly value balanced work/life. We care about family and your own personal development, and don't expect for you to be always engaged with work.
Why you might**not**be excited about us
- We're small (<10 people in the company now), so if you like more established companies, it's not (yet) the right time. Since we're an early stage startup, projects and priorities may shift.
- Our customers love us, and there's a lot we can improve. It's a great place to be, but means there's some technical debt.
- We can't (yet) provide close mentorship for junior developers, especially as we're remote and small. As we grow, we'll get a lot better at this.
- Since you'll have a lot of responsibility and creativity over projects, they may not be defined perfectly initially. You'll be expected to bring your own experience and perspective to help us do the right things, and raise flags if you think we should do things differently.
If we think you might be a good fit, we'll respond within 48 hours.
Requirements
Who you are
- You worked remotely before, or know that you'd work well with a remote team.
- Ability to think creatively and critically and thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic, and often ambiguous work environment
- 3+ years of experience developing high performance web applications
- Strong knowledge of Ruby on Rails and experience designing maintainable systems, APIs, and integrations
- You are able to decide what aspects of products need to be perfected and when to cut corners to ship faster
The main app is built with Ruby on Rails and React. We use Postgres, Heroku, AWS. While previous experience with these technologies is a plus, we’re looking for someone with broad experience.
- developing, scaling and maintaining some of our backend services including the API, reports and other infrastructure services that manage our product and logistics worldwide
- working with multiple teams day to day to bring more value to Toggl’s users, covering customer-facing web and native applications and public APIs
- designing, breaking down, and completing projects of a medium to large scope with high-level productivity
- looking for technical problems of existing system/product without guidance and offering solutions
- leading projects with a small group of people, such as hosting weekly meetings, communicating with other partners and stakeholders
- Strong backend engineering experience in Go;
- Significant professional experience with distributed systems, PostgreSQL, and Google Cloud Infrastructure;
- Experience with software engineering best practices (e.g. unit testing, code reviews, design documentation);
- Experience with performance and optimisation problems, particularly at large scale, and a demonstrated ability to both diagnose and prevent these problems;
- Ability to work cross-teams and improve cross-functional relationships which will facilitate ongoing projects;
- Eagerness to make contributions to improve the engineering team. For example, activities like interviewing, or mentoring;
- Mentor and grow junior engineers;
- Ability to give on-point and actionable feedback to peers;
- Effective communication skills: regularly achieve consensus with peers and clear status updates;
- Collaborate across the company to define, design, build and improve our product;
- Proficiency in the English language, both written and verbal, is required for success in a remote and largely asynchronous work environment;
- Having full-stack experience;
- Experience with data warehouse and analytics systems
- Experiences with Kubernetes at scale
- Experience with system architecture at scale
- Freedom to choose when and how much you work - we only measure results
- 24 days of paid time off a year, plus your local holidays
- In-person meetups for team-building (expenses covered)
- 4-6 weeks paid sabbatical (depending on the tenure)
- Laptop budget up to €2,500 and it renews every 3 years
- €2,000 budget to set up your home office, and additional €300 every year after 3 years of tenure
- €250 per month for co-working space membership and/or internet service at home
- €4,000 per year contribution to use for training, workshops, and conferences
- €2,000 per year contribution for any equipment or services to improve and/or maintain your physical and mental health
- Support for buying tools you need for doing your best work (even eyeglasses if you need a new pair)

01 — Overview
**Industry Problems
**Restaurants often have staff who have worked with them for years (sometimes decades) whose work goes unnoticed and unrecognized. This dynamic can lead to people feeling unseen and unvalued. When this happens, staff will get burnt out and want to quit.
**
Product Solution**We are creating a web app to positively reinforce restaurant staff so they continue to work hard at their jobs. The app will give managers the ability to create tasks, allow makers to complete tasks, and for performance to be tracked and rewarded. Makers will appreciate the app because they will be incentivized to keep working hard and at high quality. Managers will enjoy the app because they will have the ability to easily organize their kitchen staff’s work and see helpful analytics on their staff performance.
02 — Scope
Role
We need a frontend Vue 3 developer who can create an Ionic app from screen components in Storybook. Our app is using the Ionic framework with Vue 3 and has already been initialized. We have a dedicated UI developer (Josh) who creates the screen UIs from designs in Figma. Your responsibility would be to take those UIs and give them functionality, creating the finished product by integrating with backend APIs written by our backend developer (Dhanish).
**
Expertise Required**- Vue 3 (not just Vue 2)
- Progressive Web Apps (PWA), especially current cross-platform capabilities
- Calling a backend API (HTTP)
**
Proficiency with**- Typescript
- Asynchronous code (async/await, or promises)
- CSS Custom Properties (aka CSS Variables)
**
Helpful experience**- Ionic Framework (v6)
- Firebase / Google Cloud
**
Bonus points**- You have experience with Storybook
- You've worked with state machines (XState)
**
Budget**We will be payed per epic. More to come in next phase of the onboarding process.
**
Utilization**You’ll be expected to complete a mutually agreed upon set of tasks per one-week sprint until the epic is completed.
**
Timeline**Each sprint needs to be finished in 1-2 months
03 — Project Process
**
Method**This project will be organized in a one-week sprint structure. We will hold the following meetings to help stay aligned and on track:
- Monday morning Sprint Review and Planning to look over the work that we’ve accomplished, address any inefficiencies, and identify the tasks we will focus on next.
- Frequent text-based stand-ups to make sure we are all on track and not blocked
**
Project Leads**- Anthony Rajski — Product Owner
- Josh Loya — UI Developer
- Dhanish Mehta — Backend Developer
04 — Next Steps
Step 1
Developer to send a 3-5 minute video which shows a demo of a web app made using Vue. Video should include:
- A look at the front-end functionality
- A look at the code
- Comments on what role the developer played in creating the app
NOTE: Developers who do not submit this video will not be considered as highly as those who do. Sending this video shows you've read this far, demonstrate the value of collaboration, and respect the hiring process we're implementing.
**
Step 2**Company to share the repository and API documentation for review.
**
Step 3**An optional skill assessment to ensure developer has the expertise needed for the project.
**
Step 4**Sign contractor agreement and begin the project.
The basics
- The stack: Postgres, Node.js/Express.js, React. Currently running on Heroku, eventually AWS
- The product: We're building the first subscription intelligence platform that empowers finance teams to get real-time snapshots of how their subscription business is performing!
- The way we work:
- This is a remote job - work anywhere you want, and in any timezone on earth (or outside earth, whatever).
- We are an asynchronous team - we don't do scheduled meetings, and rely on each team member to pick their own schedule and to communicate clearly in writing and with recorded videos. Hear from our co-founder Michelle Lee on what it's like to work asynchronously (click here).
- We operate completely autonomously - no one will tell you what to do, we'll just tell you the goals and you will figure out how to work towards them with the rest of the team.
- The role you'll play on our team:
- You'd be one of the first seven engineers on the team.
- You'll work on
- Backend: database design and implementation, complex data management problems, API design and implementation, writing tests
- Frontend: building features in our react app, HTML/CSS + styled components, building amazing user experiences, writing tests
- Frontend and backend: building and iterating on our product, collaborating with designers and founders, and making a product that users will love.
- Like all start-ups we're scrappy, but not scrappy on compensation: Subscript is committed to paying our awesome team members at market-rate, including benefits.
**Our interview process
**Our interview process is designed to focus on your skills as a software engineer, and your ability to communicate clearly. We're a fully asynchronous company, so that's how we will communicate in this interview process too 🙂.
- We'll ask you to work on a small code challenge
- After reviewing the short code challenge, we'll ask you to work on a ~90 minute exercise while recording a loom (or other screen recording) video.
- If the video interview above goes well, we'll want to learn a bit more about how you communicate in writing - we will ask you to put together a technical design document. This is one of the biggest ways we communicate at Subscript, so we want to see that you can work well with that!
And finally, hopefully we'll send you an offer. And hopefully you'll accept!
**Requirements
**- You're an excellent engineer (you write high quality code, you write great tests, you ship quickly)
- You're a great communicator via writing, and via recorded videos.
- You're excited about working on a globally-distributed and erse team, in an incredibly unique culture where autonomy, accountability, and ownership are equally as valued as your skillset.
- That's it!
**Benefits
**- Unlimited vacation
- Completely flexible work schedule - work literally anytime (and anywhere) you want!
- Benefits appropriate to your location (health/dental/vision in the USA)
- Company wide retreats multiple times per year
- Like all start-ups we're scrappy, but not scrappy on compensation: Subscript is committed to paying our awesome team members at market-rate, including benefits.
