UX Engineer with a Passion for Investing
Variant Perception is a small investment team creating research and insights for sophisticated investors. We are known for building predictive models with innovative techniques. Our investment process is based on first principles thinking with empirical verification. We study history to understand how financial markets work and build systematic models using these insights.
We are looking for a UX Engineer to perfect our user interface. We need someone who can empathise with investors, understand their ideal workflow, and implement improvements: from UI components to cloud functions. Formal experience in finance is helpful but a passion for investing is key.
Your role on the team
- You will begin by implementing features and improvements relating to user preferences, recommendations, and user interactions. Our “research portal” is implemented in Typescript, Nextjs, and uses Firebase/GCP services extensively.
- You will have a critical influence on style and design. Good design means usability, simplicity, and elegance. Investing is already hard enough. We want to remove cognitive load from users and create intuitive interactions that provide them with actionable insights.
- Our quant team builds dashboards and web apps that cater to specific investor needs. The apps are embedded in the research portal. You will help design and productionize these apps.
- Our end goal is to build natural language interfaces for our data, charts, and research insights. You will be a key contributor to this effort, alongside our data engineering team.
- Ultimately, we want someone entrepreneurial to take ownership of the client facing product and help us build a better investing platform.
Are you a good fit?
You care deeply about user experience. You want to leverage technology to create happy and productive users.
You must believe it's possible to build predictive models for markets. If you believe in efficient markets, you will not like this job or our mission.
We have big goals for our team and rely on each other to achieve them. To be successful at VP you must be self-motivated, have trust in teammates, be forgiving of mistakes, be open-minded and above all enjoy figuring out problems, often from scratch.
To build the best platform we must experiment with new ideas and technologies. You should enjoy continuous learning.

Rails Backend Developer (Full-time, Remote)
We’re seeking a full-time, remote Rails backend developer in Europe or on the US east coast.
About the Work
- You’ll be the sole Ruby on Rails developer.
- You’ll mostly work on the business logic of our web platform, and only occasionally work on the views (our frontend developer usually handles that part in a separate Next.js app).
- You’ll join a small product team consisting of 1 frontend developer, 1 part-time TypeScript backend developer, 3 designers, and 1 product manager.
- You’ll report directly to the founders (one of whom is technical) and periodically collaborate with people outside the product team.
- You’ll play an active role in the shaping and scoping of new features.
About You
You must naturally thrive working independently. Furthermore, you should be:
- Impatient — You must have an insatiable desire to constantly move things forward and take action without asking for permission.
- Comfortable in uncertainty — You must regularly e into complex problems and systems without knowing all of their details upfront.
- Something to prove — A desire to show the world what you’re made of; ambition matters.
Our Development Principles
The following principles have served us well; you should at least be open to them:
- Get to production — We want to get things into their real environment as early as possible and then rapidly iterate from there. This means constantly shipping incremental pieces, whether it be directly to customers, behind feature flags, on an obscure URL, as a script, or some other form.
- Constantly fight the urge to do more — Everyone, including yourself, will naturally slide towards wanting to make the thing a little bigger and a little better. You must be vigilant in pushing back to avoid scope creep.
- Testing means clicking — Automated tests are great, but actually using the real thing, in a browser, with production data is indispensable. A feature is not tested if you haven’t tried it the way the end-user will.

About Aptible
Our Mission and Vision
Aptible’s mission is to empower every developer to focus on their ideas, not their infrastructure. We aim to fundamentally transform how software developers interact with the cloud.
We believe that the next 10 years of cloud and software development will look markedly different than the last 10 years. The historical focus has been on the mass lift-and-shift of old data center workloads into the cloud. The future focus will be on building higher level abstractions that allow developers to focus on application code without worrying about the underlying infrastructure.
As of yet, no fullstack platform-as-a-service (PaaS) is both great to start and great to scale. That's our opportunity: Aptible has already shown it's great to scale with, and in 2023, our priority will be making it great to start with. By doing so, we believe we will provide a compelling alternative, not just to other PaaS solutions, but also to infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), for product-focused developers.
The macroeconomic environment has never been more conducive to PaaS: The increasing complexity of IaaS, slowing growth of engineering team sizes, and lack of investment in and poor strategic decisions by the incumbent PaaS platform (Heroku) all foreshadow the need for a new PaaS that's both great to start with and great to scale with, for every developer and every team.
Our Platform and Roadmap
Aptible has been developing its PaaS since 2013. To date, most of the focus has been on ensuring the platform was great to scale with for the hundreds of companies and thousands of developers who rely on it for production workloads.
Now, we’re investing both in making Aptible easier to get started with and supporting increasingly sophisticated use cases while more efficiently managing resources and costs. We’re already a good part of the way towards our \"great to start\" mission: Aptible Managed Databases provision in 97 seconds as compared to 15 minutes for RDS; Aptible Apps provision in less than 90 seconds as compared to 3-5 minutes for ECS. We think we can optimize both further.
Currently, our platform today supports over 40,000 daily events like deployments and resource provisioning against the over 50,000 containers that run apps and databases for our customers. We expect these numbers to rapidly grow in 2023, as we invest in acquiring new customers faster through improvements to our product-led growth strategies.
Our Team
We're a small team of engineers—and gamers, musicians, runners, bakers, outdoor enthusiasts, coffee connoisseurs, and more.
We've been a globally distributed team since 2013, and have always focused on our company culture, probably more than most any other team of our size.
As Aptible has grown, we've learned how to empower each team member to make an outsized impact. Employees have highlighted the team's “thoughtfulness, energy, and grit” and Aptible's focus on “always looking for ways to improve.”
Read more about what it's like working at Aptible on Glassdoor.
Our Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion
We prioritize ersity within our team and value different perspectives, educational backgrounds, and life experiences. We encourage people from underrepresented backgrounds to apply.

About Us
Close is a bootstrapped, profitable, 100% remote, ~80 person team of thoughtful iniduals who value autonomy and impact. We’re eager to make a product our customers fall in love with over and over again.
We ❤️ startups & SMBs. Since 2013, we’ve been building a CRM that focuses on better communication, without the hassle of manual data entry or complex UI. Our goal: double the productivity of every sales rep.
Our backend tech stack currently consists primarily of Python Flask web apps with our TaskTiger scheduler handling many of the backend asynchronous task processing chores. Our data stores include MongoDB, PostgreSQL, Elasticsearch, and Redis. All of our compute runs through CI/CD pipelines that build Docker images, run automated tests and deploy to our Kubernetes clusters. Our backend primarily serves a well-documented public API that our front-end JavaScript app consumes. Our infrastructure is heavily automated using AWS tools, Terraform, and Ansible.
We ❤️ open sourcing our code and ideas on our GitHub and on The Making of Close, our behind-the-scenes Product & Engineering blog. Check out our projects like SocketShark, TaskTiger, LimitLion and ciso8601.
